Xiaomi to offer Windows 10 OS for Mi4 & Minimum mobile HW requirements for Windows 10

I recently wrote about a quick test for finding out if your computer will be compatible with Windows 10, but what about mobile phones? While we’re mostly MediaTek fans here, it’s still interesting to take a look at what Microsoft has decreed.check-compatibility-uefi-v2.3.1-Untitled

The SoC’s already set and confirmed to run Windows 10 are Intel Cherry Trail, Atom X3, all SoCs based on Skylake, AMD’s Carrizo and Carrizo-L and Qualcomm’s MSM8909, MSM8208, MSM8994, MSM8992 and MSM8952.

There’s no word yet on MTK, and I suspect there won’t be any official word regarding this. Though I wouldn’t be surprised to see MTK mobiles running Windows 10, it’s not something I’d wager on happening.

Xiaomi to offer Windows 10 to Mi4 users

Interestingly, Xiaomi and Microsoft have already made plans to allow Mi4 to download and install Windows 10. This will not be a dual-boot situation, but will replace the existing Android installation.mi4

This is an official announcement from the Windows team and according to them, a select group on Mi4 users will be able to test the Windows 10 Technical Preview prior to the official launch.

From Microsoft Windows 10 Team: “This is an experimental program entirely led by Microsoft, and we are happy that Mi fans with Mi 4 devices in China will be able to participate and provide feedback”

I find this to be an intriguing move by both Xiaomi and Windows. We’ve known Xiaomi has hit the big time for quite awhile, but the typical Western consumer is more likely than not to never of heard of Xiaomi, let alone Mi4. As well, we know that Windows has a had a very difficult time getting a foothold in the mobile market and I think a forward thinking, fast growing company such as Xiaomi may be exactly what Microsoft needs to give them a boost and strong brand attraction in the mobile OS market.

All in all, a smart move by both companies. Xiaomi in terms of offering simple OS flexibility and Windows in getting their OS on hip devices from an ultra-fast growing mobile manufacturer.
