UMi X1 vs JiaYu / JaiYu G3 – Ready, Set, Fight!

Where they differ majorly are their choice of looks. UMi X1 is sleek and thin and has a slick back panel. The JiaYu / JaiYu G3 is a bit boxier and thicker, but still no slacker in the looks department. I admire JiaYu / JaiYu for daring to be a bit different. A big part of the shell is made from brushed aluminum, giving it a sense of class and originality.

Perhaps the biggest thing to consider regarding specifications is their respective battery sizes. UMi X1 packs only 1750mA. For the 8.5mm thickness, you can’t expect much more, but when comparing it to JiaYu / JaiYu G3’s monstrous 2750mA battery, some serious considerations need to be made regarding how often you’ll need/want to be charging and/or swapping out batteries.

This is a difficult call. What it comes down to is your choice of style, and how important battery size is for your use. Either one of these phones will make an excellent choice, but with a machete to our neck, GizBeat must choose the UMi X1. This is due to style preference – though I like the unique looks of the JiaYu / JaiYu G3, I like the slickness of the UMi X1 a tad more. I also have perhaps been slightly swayed by JiaYu / JaiYu’s stumbles along the manufacturing path. Additionally, for my personal use, I’m rarely away from a spot where I can charge, and a 2nd battery can be purchased if needed down the road.

I must end with a caveat – we know already the JiaYu / JaiYu G3 puts out top-notch photos. If UMi X1 puts out photos of lower quality, the JiaYu G3 with its significantly larger battery becomes the GizBeat choice in this duel.  I invite any readers who may have the UMi X1 to send your photo samples, so we can pit them against the JiaYu G3.

Both these phones will have very good to excellent build. These days, a company would have to try quite hard to make a crap build phone. Materials are more solid and cheap than ever. I’ve still got my old Star phone. It’s one of the cheaper China brands. It’s been dropped from 4′ to solid concrete more times than I can count. The glass is all cracked of course, as it landed face down several times, but the capacitive touch still works flawlessly and the phone itself still functioning.

Hi, I live in China (shanghai), but many big retail chains don’t seem to carry either. Any advice on who would carry them? Or a Chinese webstore to buy them from?

Why not wait a little longer for the next generation of MediaTek MT6588 CPU devices to enter the market ?

This would depend on an individual’s situation. I wrote a few posts about this.
