Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 preview

Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 vs Xiaomi Redmi Pro. There was a bit of confusion recently with Xiaomi and their recently released Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 and Redmi Pro. Some thought that there wouldn’t actually be a “4” model; that the Redmi Pro was the updated Redmi Note 3, however there are actually two distinctly different models released by Chinese upstart Xiaomi.

Let’s have a look at the main similarities and differences between Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 and Xiaomi Redmi Pro.

The similarities and differences

SoC: The Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 and low-version Xiaomi Redmi Pro carry the powerful Helio X20 MTK6797 SoC. This SoC scores 85k+ on Antutu and is considered quite powerful. The GPU is Mali-T880MP4@700MHz and the CPU is a 10-core big.LITTLE setup, with dual Cortex-A72 [email protected], 4 Cortex-A53 [email protected], and 4 Cortex-A53 [email protected].

There are also 2 higher version Helio X25 varients of the Xiaomi Redmi Pro. Click here to see Helio X20 vs Helio X25 (opens in new tab).

Display: Both phones have 1080p 5.5″ displays. The Redmi Pro (XRP) steps up to the plate with an OLED display, while the Redmi Note 4 (XRN4) will carry LCD.

Cameras: The XRP has a dual-camera setup, while the XRN4 has a single 13mp camera.

RAM ROM: The XRP comes in 3 variants: 3GB/32GB (Helio X20), 3GB/64GB (Helio X25), and 4GB/128GB (Helio X25). The XRN4 comes in 2 varients: 2GB/16GB and 3GB/64GB.

Battery: Both the XRP and XRN4 will carry 4000mAh batteries.

TF SD expandability: The XRP is not expandable, while the XRN4 accepts TF SD card expansion.

XRP price:

  • Helio X20 MT6797 3gb 32gb – 1499rmb ($224)
  • Helio X25 MT6797T 3gb 64gb – 1699rmb ($254)
  • Helio X25 MT6797T 4gb 128gb – 2499rmb ($374)

XRN4 price:

  • 2GB/32GB – 899rmb ($130)
  • 3GB/64GB – 1199rmb ($180)

The big draw

Clearly the biggest difference between Xiaomi Redmi Pro vs Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 is the dual-camera setup and the OLED display. If you truly want to step up into a flagship style setup, the XRP is a phone to consider. You get the very good Sony IMX258 camera with the XRP.

However, there’s a big difference in price, with the low version XRP costing $100 more than the low version XRN4. It’s also worth considering that the XRN4 has TF SD expandable storage, while the XRP will be limited to the storage you buy it with.

Unless the note 4 camera is a big improvement over the note 3 pro, I can’t see this as too much of an upgrade. Basically the same phone with a debatably slightly better processer and perhaps better build quality. Don’t get me wrong, it looks like a great phone, but xiaomi have set the bar pretty high. Guess I was expecting a little more

Right Jh1, you’ve made several excellent points. The Redmi Note 4 SoC is more powerful than Redmi Note 3 Pro, but beyond that, there’s not a lot to get excited about…Unless camera is a big step up, as you’ve mentioned.

Also as you’ve mentioned, Xiaomi set the bar incredibly high, and now Redmi Note 3 Pro is available for <$150. We may be reviewing Redmi Note 4, stay posted.
