UFS 3.0 flash standard has just been announced and flagship phones are about to make a big jump in the storage speed department.
The standard released by JEDEC doubles the theoretical speed of the current UFS 2.1 to 2.9GB/s. Additionally, the standard will lower power consumption and allow operation in a wider temp range.
While it is not likely the maximum 2.9GB/s will be reached by consumer devices, it does require host devices to utilize hardware which supports the 2.9GB/s rate.
Anybody who records 4K on their mobile knows the process can often heat up your phone. The UFS 3.0 standard means we may soon see up to 4K60P and possibly up to 8K resolution recorded without overheating and maxing out buffers and CPU.
Samsung is slated to put out the first devices adhering to UFS 3.0, perhaps with their already touted 512MB internal storage.
