It just gets better and better. Last week we released an article regarding TCL possibly releasing an 8-core (octa-core) MTK6592 smartphone in November. Now just breaking is confirmation that not only will we have two new MTK SoC, the MTK6588 and MTK6592. They’ll both have the Mali MP450-MP4. But the MTK6588 will be 4-core and MTK6592 will be 8-core.
There were rumors floating that MTK6592 would be using Mali-400 as opposed to SGX PowerVR GPUs, but the news that MTK would step up and use Mali-450 MP4 is news to get the Gizbeat juices flowin’!
As you see in the chart here, the MTK6592 will be clocked at 700MHz and use 1MB L2 cache, as opposed to 600MHz and 512KB in the MTK6588.
Some interesting possibilities come into play here as the MTK6592 and MTK6588 will supposedly be pin compatible with current generation MTK phone boards. What’s that mean? Manufacturer’s will more or less be able to begin using the new generation chips in current motherboards, rather than having to completely redesign the phone. Excellent news for consumers and it should mean we’ll see MTK6592 phones with Mali-450 MP4 sold to people outside China inside 2013. Gizbeat’s bettin’ on it.
MediaTek will officially be announcing the chips on November 20th in China.
