In part 5 we’ll discuss what could be the biggest reason some of you may want to wait for the MTK MT6589 / MTK6589 and MTK mt6583. The GPU! The SGX544 is a huge step up from SGX531, and will be on-board the quad-core mt6588 / mtk6588 and the dual-core mt6583 as well.
The new GPU will have more than double the power of the current generation, and should easily power even the most graphics heavy FPS games out there. While the SGX531 (current gen) is adequate for most all tasks, anyone who’s into FPS or graphics intensive games will appreciate the extra horse the SGX544 (next gen) will bring to the table.
Going on the fact that the mt6575 and mt6577 are easily handling 720p, the inclusion of this GPU along with the huge 50% bump in CPU power (1.0/1.2Ghz –> 1.5/1.7) should make short work of 1080p. I’ll stick with my prediction that we’ll see MTK MT6589 / MTK6589 powering 1080p phones in 2013.
I’m re-posting this graph for easy reference. A new post “Buy now, or wait” coming on up!
