Zopo ZP998 Review and Conclusion!

ZOPO-ZP998Before we get into the review lets take a look at the basics of the Zopo ZP998.

The device has a 5.5 inch 1080p display, a Mediatek MT6592 octa core processor clocked at 1.7 GHz, and 2 GB of RAM. Their is a memory expansion slot, OTG, NFC, and the phone is powered by a 2400 mAh battery.

Display

The display on the ZP998 really is amazing. The colors are so brilliant and bright and the viewing angles are excellent. Even when the screen is put onto auto, it remains quite bright. There aren’t many phones you run across that really make you take notice, but without a doubt, Zopo has done an outstanding job choosing a proper LCD for the ZP998.

Software

Zopo have modified the ROM and UI this time around, but I really liked it. They didn’t do so much that I was lost in the changes but just enough for me realize it was different. The icons have an iPhone feel to them but you still keep all of the flexibility of Android. You can’t add widgets by long pressing on the screen, but if you go to your main app menu the widget section is still there to be used. Also, the system and pull down menus have blue text on a white background which is a simple but a nice change from the norm.

Wi-Fi

The way I tested the Wi-Fi was to take a 5Ghz and 2.4 Ghz speed test right by my router. I then took another 2 tests at the furthest point at the top level of my house and a third set of tests at the furthest point in my basement. Just a note, I have had recent phones and tablets that have struggled badly in the location of the second test and had no reception at all in the basement location. So how did the Zopo do?

5Ghz download speeds:

  • Router 31Mbps
  • Top level 26 Mbps
  • Basement 13 Mbps

2.4Ghz download speeds:

  • Router 34 Mbps
  • Top level 34 Mbps
  • Basement 29 Mbps

These are some of the strongest signals I’ve tested in a mobile device. Another success for Zopo.

Call clarity

I made numerous calls and while the ZP998 was far from the top of the list for volume, the clarity was very good. Keep in mind the volume may be raised in the engineering settings. A simple download of Mobile Uncle and the changes can be attempted.

Speakers

I tested the speakers with various styles of music with no issues. Although they aren’t the loudest on the market, they definitely get the job done. They were crisp when they needed to be and carried enough bass to get by, but would be considered lacking for users that listen to styles with heavy bass. Like most phones the speaker is on the rear of the phone so having it turned away from you or placing it with the back side down will muffle the sound.

Video playback

I tested the video capabilities with 1080p, 720p, and Youtube. There was no lagging or stuttering on any of the files I used. The MT6592 handles any media you throw at it with ease. Whether the new Clearmotion technology that automatically converts frame rates played any part in that is uncertain, but the results were good.

Web browsing

I have found the web browsing on the new MT6592 octa cores to be much faster than the MT6589T quad cores, and the ZP998 is no exception. I used Maxthon browser to navigate many web pages during my time using the phone and found it’s performance was consistently very good. Oddly enough I found the H9008 I tried last month to have slightly faster browsing even thought they are using the same SoC.

Too bad the GPS is still a hit or miss in Chinese (mediatek) smartphones. GPS is quite essential for a lot of people.

Absolutely no problem with my iNew V3 (MTK6582). But it does not work with my XiaoCai X9 (MTK6589)

I think at this point it’s really the phone makers that are causing the problems. If the MT6592 is going into 2 phones and one has terrible GPS and the other is really good, it has to be the GPS antenna.
    The H9008 has a great GPS and it’s a MT6592.

Comparing Chinese brands: my THL W200S ($US200), rooted with the latest OTA ROM. It has only a 2000 maHr battery. Could you use a standard PlayStore app for battery life please, so that we can compare with our units?

    Nenamark: 60.7fps, AnTuTu: 26327, Vellamo: 2008 (HTML), 621 (METAL); CPU PRIME: 6120

Does it also have GorillaGlass3? My THLs do not have NFC, & if my other phones had Gorilla Glass, it was not the latest “3”.

The weak GPS feature of all smartphones can often be better served by Bluetooth GPS units. My wifi signal is boosted by a small, cheap wifi extender box in fixed locations.

    Hi there,

I’ve bought a ZP998 from Ebay.co.uk and it seems real but it got only 1GB of RAM (at Settings>Apps>Running).
How can I verify whether it is fake or maybe I’m looking at the wrong place.

    Thanks

That is one of the correct places to look. You should see ‘used’ and ‘free’. If they add to 1gb that means you have 1gb RAM.

pro: great battery autonomy, about twice better than an iphone, 30% better than a galaxy S4
    great camera, real colors

cons: gps is very impecise, more than 100m errors ! Impossible to use, tried with several roms
bluetooth works, but really buggy. I have to use it driving 8h/day, and have to rebbot the phone at least once a day, (working with one of the best ear kit ever: plantronics’ voyager legend and voyager pro)

I need these two functions to work, thus i will give this phone to a friend. Have any advice of a chinese phone that works well with GPS (in France) and BT ?

Hi, same issue with my ZP998 and also in France. The problem come from the antenna. To save money Zopo decided to use the wifi antenna also for the GPS but it’s not the same bandwith, no chance with any other ROM (tested a lot), it can improve but don’t wait any miracle. There is also problems with mic and speaker it can be solve with mobileuncle tools. Personnaly I will change it to Huawei Honor 6 because I need 2 sim cards.

I got zopo zp998 here in the philippines and its amazing works like an iphone 6plus and looks like samsung note3, it also has a really good HD screen, i am very much satisfied with this elegant smart phone, i got no problems with all the functions so thank you zopo mobile. All i just want to happen right now was you zopo to provide hard back cases for zp998 here in the philippines coz guys mostly prefer to have hard cases at the back than having smart covers. Thankbu very much..

Purchased 2xZP980 & 1xZP999 ZOPO phones as Christmas presents from ZOPO EU Warehouse, the ZP999 was completely useless, freezing every few minutes/hours, one ZP980 restarts at least once daily, one working OK.

Still in correspondence with ZOPO via PayPal, they are insisting that the phones are returned to China for repair at my expense & risk, regardless of the fact that they were purchased in Europe, shipped from EU warehouse and were faulty on arrival.
