Meizu is widely considered to be one of the top China phone brands. Most of their models carry premium specs along with a mid-range price.

The MX5 is Meizu’s latest and greatest, sporting MediaTek’s high-end Helio X10 SoC. In comparison to the powerful MT6752’s 8 [email protected], the MTK Helio X10 has an 8-core CPU clocked at 2.2GHz. GPU wise, the Helio sports PowerVR G6200.

The rear camera is the Sony Exmor IMX220, a whopping 21MP sensor

The OS on the Meizu X5 is Android Lollipop 5.1. Display is what’s become mostly standard for 2015 flagship mobiles: 5.5″@1080p. The front glass is Gorilla Glass. As is standard with most recent China flagships, Meizu X5 will have a fingerprint scanner.

RAM is a big 3GB, and ROM storage 16GB. The battery capacity is hefty 3150mAh. Sensors will include the standard array, as well as a gravity sensor and gyroscope.

The big news? The rear camera is the Sony Exmor IMX220, a whopping 21MP sensor, but more importantly: the IMX220 is a 1/2.3″ type sensor. This is the sensor size included in consumer compacts and enthusiast super-zooms. Indeed the sensor size is larger than what’s included in most name brand flagships, including iPhone 6.

To break it down for the uninitiated: generally speaking, the larger the sensor, the better the dynamic range and low light capabilities. Additionally, this sensor is BSI (backside illuminated), which further improves low light image capability. The IMX220 is a higher megapixel version of what’s in the Samsung Galaxy S6.

From Sony:

IMX220 is a CMOS active pixel type image sensor which adopts the Exmor RS”‘ technology to achieve high sensitivity, low noise. and high speed image capturing. It is embedded with backside illuminated imaging pixel, low noise analog amplifier. column parallel ND converters which enables high speed capturing. digital amplifier, image binning circuit, timing control circuit for imaging size and frame rate.

The Meizu MX5 is CNC machined and will be dual-SIM with frequency support including worldwide 3G with WCDMA 850/900/1900/2100 and 4G LTE 1800/2100/2600.

With 3GB RAM, Helio X10 Turbo, and the Sony Exmor RS IMX220, the Meizu is a serious powerhouse. Those looking for a very powerful mobile with outstanding processing power and top notch camera at half the price of the flagships can put Meizu MX5 on their shortlist.

Does this have an external memory slot? Not mentioned in specs…..but have seen something along the lines of external memory not supported?

Hello Pete, according to specs there is no memory card slot for upgrading storage.

Strange that they’ve opted to go without a memory card, that’s a very popular feature in both China and India

The specs are great, so is the price, but the Chinese phones are always a step behind. All new major brand phones now come with 2K screens and not just FHD screens. VR is going to big next year, and you need at least 5.5inch screen with 4K resolution, which is what Samsung, LG, HTc etc are moving towards. The MTK chipset cant support higher than fhd at the moment, so it lacks far behind on this.

      Hello Andre,

You have a point to some degree, but for myself I prefer 720p on anything 6″ or smaller. There’s just not enough benefit from the minimal visual improvement to justify the extra battery consumption and cost. Stepping into 4k on 5.5″ displays? This just makes no sense to me and I find it unlikely that 1 in 100 people would even notice the difference between 400ppi and 800ppi.

This is similar to the more MP is better marketing mentality.

When stepping into 8″ tablets and such, then there may be a point to be made for UHD/4k.

      Hello Manos,

Meizu is one of the top China brands, and Meizu MX is a quite popular line of mobiles. The ROM should be very good in regards to stability.

16gb rom with no external memory? After the OS, launcher and included apps are installed, how much will that allow for user storage? 11 or 12gb at most. And photo sizes are going to be huge with a 21mp rear camera. Meizu has really shot itself in the foot with this handset. It’ll be interesting to see what the true specs of the MX5 Pro are, if it really exists.

      Hello MichaelM,

These are the true specs. Though, in addition to the 16GB version, there will also be 32GB and 64GB versions available. Great way to add $50-$100 to the cost of the phone at little cost to the manufacturer… Unfortunately.

I think 16GB (12GB free) should be enough for most users. I have an 8GB (6GB free) phone as my main mobile for 9 months now and not even close to full, though obviously this will depend on the user.

You have a point regarding the camera, though there’s really no point to taking such high MP pics with your phone unless planning on making posters or doing huge crops.

Not saying you’re incorrect here. For sure the lack of SD expansion is something to be considered.
