4GB/32GB/2K display Elephone Vowney preview

Not content to sit on the sidelines, Elephone continues to put out innovative mobiles. With the solid P8000 I’m hoping a corner has been turned and that the P8000 wasn’t just an anomaly; their upcoming Vowney, Vowney light and M2 may go some way towards telling the tale.

Elephone Vowney carries some of the most impressive specs we’ve seen in a China phone: huge 4GB RAM, ultra-dense 2k display, the very powerful Helio X10, and the excellent 21MP Sony IMX230.

Included in the mix is NFC, which is something we don’t see too often with China phones these days, touch ID, and a nice sized ROM partition at 32GB.

The Vowney, on paper, looks like one hell of a lot of phone for the money. However, there are a few things about it which are ignored by websites and reviewers, including yourselves, such as:

    1. The release date

This has changed at least 4 times now. Originally slated for June, then August, then September, October, and now November. Potential buyers are becoming more jaded by the day.

    2. The battery size

This has changed so many times that no one knows what size it will be. It has been reported, at various times, as 3600mah, 3850mah, 4000mah and 4200mah. Even Elephone’s advertising details are misleading, with pictures showing one size as the headline with a different size immediately beneath it. Even elephonemobile.com, Elephone’s official site, currently says it is a 4000mah battery in the specs but states in the advertising that it is a 3850mah battery in the headline and 3600mah directly beneath it.

    3. Dual Boot Option

The Vowney was originally touted as having a dual boot Android/Windows 10 system. The Windows 10 option has been dropped now and although hundreds, if not thousands, of potential buyers have asked why, Elephone just ignores them.

    4. Screen Protection

With a 5.5 inch screen, you would expect the Vowney to have some sort of screen protection. It doesn’t. And at the price, you have to ask why. Other phones costing a lot less, and with smaller screens, are including Gorilla Glass 3 whic, while not exactly the very latest in Gorilla Glass protection, is certainly a good start.

    5. NFC

The Vowney is advertised as having NFC. But don’t be thinking you’re going to be able to use it with your Samsung, Sony, LG or HTC devices. The Vowney uses a type of NFC called Hotknot, which is not compatible with “normal” NFC.

    6. Other Specs

There are even questions about the included chipset in the Vowney. It is widely reported as having the Helio X10 8-core processor running at 1.9ghz. shows an MTK6795 2ghz Quadcore CPU and IMG Rogue G6200 GPU. And of the 32gb storage, “about” 26gb will be available. So what exactly is taking up 8gb of storage? Probably a lot of bloatware. And with that comes the added concern that there will be malware as well. Again, Elephone has remained pretty tight-lipped as to what apps will be preinstalled.
