UMi X1 vs JiaYu / JaiYu G3 – Ready, Set, Fight!

Today I’ll pit two top o’ the GizBeat shortlist smartphones against each other – the UMi X1 and JiaYu / JaiYu G3.

There has been much drama surrounding JiaYu / JaiYu G3. From at some points thinking the phone was just a myth, to licensing issues, to LCD and camera problems. Even coming down to the somewhat comical point of JiaYu / JaiYu blaming unreceived cases as the reason they weren’t shipping units out.

JiaYu / JaiYu’s issues with getting their product to market is somewhat worrying. It’s something to consider when laying down a couple hundred.

UMi X1 on the other hand has been a bit quicker to get to serious business status. The phone was announced a few months back and already available for shipping internationally. JaiYu / JiaYu has yet to come out in large numbers even in China.

Spec wise, these are two very similar phones. They both sport the MediaTek MTK MT6577 / MTK6577 CPU, 2mp / 8mp cameras and 1280*720 4.5″ IPS LCDs.

Where they differ slightly are with their choice of LCD protection. The JiaYu / JaiYu G3 has chosen to go with Corning Gorilla Glass, while UMi X1 has chosen AGC tempered glass from Japan. Though the protecting names aren’t the same, they both have taken protecting the LCD seriously, and you can be sure to get top-notch crash protection with both these models.

Both these phones will have very good to excellent build. These days, a company would have to try quite hard to make a crap build phone. Materials are more solid and cheap than ever. I’ve still got my old Star phone. It’s one of the cheaper China brands. It’s been dropped from 4′ to solid concrete more times than I can count. The glass is all cracked of course, as it landed face down several times, but the capacitive touch still works flawlessly and the phone itself still functioning.

Hi, I live in China (shanghai), but many big retail chains don’t seem to carry either. Any advice on who would carry them? Or a Chinese webstore to buy them from?

Why not wait a little longer for the next generation of MediaTek MT6588 CPU devices to enter the market ?

This would depend on an individual’s situation. I wrote a few posts about this.
