According to inside sources, the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S8 will be following in Xiaomi Mix’s footsteps and carry a bezel-less display, with the display taking up the entire top real estate of the phone.
S7 woes
Several months back Samsung’s troubles began with batteries catching on fire on airplanes and in cars. Since then, Samsung has issued a recall, which will cost Samsung more than $6 billion.
Apple is looking towards OLED, and big China manufacturers such as Xiaomi are putting the heat on Samsung.
Samsung needs a win with the Galaxy S8, or it could prove disastrous for their mobile division.
Getting rid of the physical home button
It’s baffling that devices are still including physical buttons, as official Google mobiles have nixed them ever since the Galaxy Nexus released in 2011. Manufacturers have found ways to shrink the bottom portion substantially and still include physical buttons, but removing them opens even more territory for display space.
If the reports are true, Samsung has finally succumbed to peer pressure and may be offing them in the Galaxy S8.
Getting rid of the top bezel
You might wonder where the earpiece speaker will go if the top bezel is gone. While not yet confirmed, it’s likely Samsung will employ a similar solution as with Xiaomi Mix, using internal piezoelectric ceramic acoustic technology (opens in new tab) to vibrate sound to your ear.
The front camera on the Xiaomi Mix has been moved to the bottom bezel, and Samsung may employ a similar solution with S8.
Taking more time
According to sources, this time around Samsung will be much more cautious before releasing their device to the public, with in-depth stress testing in multiple environments, including high altitudes, high temperatures and different humidity levels.
It makes sense, as Samsung phones are used across the globe in many different situations.
Galaxy S8 SoC
The Samsung Galaxy S8, as with previous Samsung Galaxy releases, will have some carrying Qualcomm Snapdragon 835, and some carrying Samsung’s Exynos SoC.
When is Samsung Galaxy S8 coming?
The Galaxy S8 is scheduled for release in April or May of 2017.
