While the Gionee GN700W didn’t get a lot of love from foreign consumers, if they pop out their Gionee GN708W with MTK6589 ahead of the rest of the pack, Gionee may find themselves a bit more popular.
The Gionee is bucking the trend towards higher resolution HD LCDs and sticking with 960*540. This could mean better performance, but with the SG544 packed inside, it won’t make much of a difference. In other words, you won’t see a real world performance difference comparing a 720P LCD to QHD with today’s current games. Still, as far as my eyes are concerned, I’ve got no problem with 960*540 QHD and find it easily pleasant enough to look at. Gionee is also bucking the ‘bigger is better’ screen trend and sticking with 4.5″.
I like the looks of the GN708W. Though it’s not pushing any boundaries, it’s slim enough and nice enough looking, and packs a slightly larger than standard 2100mA battery.
They’ll also be sticking with 1GB RAM/4GB ROM. This should be enough for the standard user, but power users may want to look elsewhere as many of the new MTK6589 are coming with 2GB ROM and 8-32GB ROM.
