Do I Need a Phone With 2GB RAM? 1GB vs 2GB!

A year or so back, the big questions was, ‘do I need 1GB RAM?’ Most China phones came with 512MB, and only the more expensive China phones came with 1GB. Fast forward one year, and most main stream China phones are coming with 1GB and pushing on to 2GB.

So often now, we hear ‘do I need 2GB?’. The quick and dirty answer for the average user is ‘no’. Obviously it can’t hurt to have 2GB, but the fact is that most people won’t notice a difference.

So what exactly IS the difference? The main NOTICEABLE difference is that with 1GB, apps you’re not using while multitasking will be more likely to fall out of memory, and you’ll have to wait a second or two for it to reload. Depending on the situation, this could be a slight headache.

I’ll give a couple examples so you can get the idea. Imagine you’re in the middle of a long post on a forum in your browser, and a chat comes through that you need to answer. You switch over to the chat, then make a phone call, open your dictionary to look up a word, go to take a leak and come back to your browser to finish up the post. Ahhh! It’s gone. Shit. So now you need to start over again. That may not have happened if you had 2GB.

It’s important to remember, if you had answered the chat and gone directly back to the browser, most likely this wouldn’t have happened. But doing several things in between MAY push the current tab out of memory. It only takes a couple seconds to reload, but likely you will have lost the post you were in the middle of making.

Another example, you’re in the middle of a difficult level in Nova 3 or other larger memory hungry game, and a chat comes through. You switch over to chat and come back to your game. Ahhh! Shit, the game is rebooting and you need to restart at your last save. Once again, this is something that may not have happened if you had 2GB.

What’s happening is when Android runs low on memory, Android will push apps out that are of lower importance. The importance is dictated by the type of service said app falls under.

To sum it up, generally having 1GB is not an issue. I’m a bit of a power user myself. I’m often switching back and forth between Line, YouTube, Chrome, Cool Reader, but have very rarely found 1GB to be a hindrance.

However, if you are someone that is making a lot of posts through your phone while busy with chats and multitasking, or you’re switching through many apps and don’t have a second to spare, 2GB should be considered. It also should be remembered that even with 2GB, the situations mentioned above can still happen, it will just be less likely.

My current phone (MTK6577 with 1GB RAM) can switch from one application to another in more-or-less acceptable speed, but it takes aaaaages (sometimes 10-15 seconds) to get back to the home screen, especially after some memory intensive tasks (like a longer browsing session, with multiple tabs for example).
I don’t really have anything on the homescreen, only three widgets (retro clock and date, and the stock music player). Nothing really runs in the background either (just the usual almost unkillable facebook, viber, maps). The launcher is also the stock one, android 4.0.4.
I guess the situation would be better with more RAM, what do you think?
I’m eyeing the Jiayu G4 Advanced specifically because the amount of RAM, but I guess I would be happy with something cheaper, if you can give some tips on how to eliminate that one long pause. :)

It might be better with more RAM, but this sounds like something else is going on. There’s no way the stock launcher should take 10 seconds to reload, even if it fell out of memory. Have you tried different firmware for your phone? Perhaps the stock firmware has some bugs. I recommend you try Apex launcher. See if the same issue happens. If it still happens, try different firmware.

I have another situation where RAM must be as huge as you can… great if 32GB or RAM (i know no mobile yet rise so much RAM)… i am talking about RAM, not SD storage, neither internal storage.

Note: I am talking for ARM based mobiles/tablets, not for such x86 based tablets!!!

One situation can be this: Use the android to ’emulate’ a x86 architecture and on it run Windows, Linux, BeOS or whatever S.O. (x86) you want, like using Limbo, QEmu like apps, etc…

Also in this situation: Use at the same time than Android a Linux arm distribution and connect to it using VCN, or also better running a chrooted linux distro on an Android.

I have read some guys had on their phone a Linux Ubuntu 13.04 full distro with LibreOffice and OpenOffice full working at a speed near to half of a decent PC, but enough smooth to work with them.

In that situations it is desired as much cores as you can and as much ram as you can to run them smoothly.

I can imagine more situtations, but what matters are the ones i can not yet imagine… i only would buy at least with 2GB of RAM, no less!!! and a real Octa-Core of course!

I think that is not a bad article but the really answer is YES! you can see the differencies between

This will entirely depend on your setup and use. Can you show the difference between 1GB and 2GB? Yes, of that there’s no doubt. But the average user will never know the difference. What matters is how many apps you have running in the background. The more apps installed, the more will run in the background (whether you want them to or not), thus the more often you’ll see apps you’re multitasking with fall out of memory.

In games u can see the diference see the video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J442i7T7R2k

I think the best performances cames with 720p MT6589T and 2GB of RAM, in my opinion is the best actual MTK configuration.

Yes, a phone with better SoC and lower resolution is going to perform better. Regarding games, 1GB vs 2GB RAM in Android MAY make a difference with huge graphics heavy games that eat tons of RAM, otherwise no. As you see the phone on the right smoothed out to the same as the phone on the left after a short time. There could be several reasons for that. But he stopped playing the phone on the right way too soon.

Also, there’s more to a phone than just the SoC/RAM/Resolution. Which is why you can see significant differences in phones of different brands with the same SoC/amount of RAM/Resolution.

You might want to re-read the article. I’m not arguing against 2GB. The average user without a lot of apps running in the background will likely never notice. Those who switch a lot between apps and have several hundred apps installed (depending on how many of these apps running in the background) and/or those who play big graphics intensive games likely will.

I think with HD resolution 1G ram is enough like you say in your article, but if you have to move a FHD screen 2G is a must, that is my opinion, another reason to avoid FHD in such small screens
