A few weeks backs we posted about the possibility of the MT6290 LTE modem being compatible with SoC other than MT6595. That is to say, that MT6290 will be backwards compatible with MT6582 and MT6592 SoC.
We’re one step closer that possibility becoming a reality, as TCL Alcatel is about to release the One Touch Pop S7. An MT6582 phone with the MT6290 LTE modem.
This is great news, as not only will the pricier upcoming MTK6595 SoC phones carry the MT6290, we’ll have it available in inexpensive, budget MTK6582 phones as well as mid-range MTK6592 phones.
As discussed in previous articles, the MT6290 will be multi-mode multi-band, supporting FDD-LTE, TD-LTE, HSPA+, D-SCDMA, EDGE, GSM/GPRS.
The TCL Alcatel One Touch Pop S7 will be MT6582 1.3GHz, 540p IPS LCD and reportedly will have a huge 3000mA battery.
We won’t hold our breath, as TCL seems to continuously be rumored to be the first one out the gate with different chipsets or functions, but never even come close to being first. Still, it’s positive news and at least means MT6582 combined with MT6290 is possible and likely to be coming within the next few months.
The question still looming over the MT6290 is what bands will China manufacturers choose to support? We’re hoping that it comes supporting worldwide frequencies as standard, but we’re far from knowing for sure.
