Many have been frustrated with MediaTek and China mobile’s non-existent adoption of newer versions of Android.
The current rumor is that this is going to soon change. While we surely won’t hold our breath, it is at least good news the rumor is in the air.
It’s also believed by some that past models will be coming with Android 4.4 firmware upgrades, but this is something we’ll have to go against the grain on. It’s highly unlikely to see 4.4 for MTK units unless it’s via prosumer port, or in some exceptional cases of the more popular phones such as iNew v3, popular Lenovo models and perhaps some of Jiayu’s offerings.
It’s not only China phones that are a bit behind
It’s important to note, that even the most popular main stream models from Samsung didn’t get KitKat officially until just a couple months back.
Doogee or not doogee. That is the question
Again, at this point it’s just a rumor and there’s no solid news from MediaTek, but Doogee has published specs for their up-and-coming iNew clone, the Doogee Dagger 550 and KitKat appears to be planned for this model, so it adds some slight weight to the rumor. Though not much, as Doogee originally announced their Doogee DG2014 as coming with non-existent Android 4.2.9.
Be happy with your JellyBeans for now
On another note, while progress is great, we have zero issue with JB 4.2. It has treated us well, and the changes in Kitkat are not all for the better, as many bugs are still being worked out in even the main stream models such as Samsung and Sony.
Beyond the bugs, Kitkat offers only modest improvements over JellyBean. With a fairly boring list of improvements (many of which can be achieved via 3rd party apps and gapps updates), such as ‘Full screen wallpaper with preview’. There are a few interesting new features, such as low-power audio playback, HDR+ photography and improved touchscreen response, but they are compatible only with Nexus devices.
