We did several previews of recent Gionee releases and the E7 Mini was one of them. Though the phone was announced way back in December 2013, it’s just now being released. Interestingly — with the MT6588 SoC.
Gionee E7 Mini review LCD
The dimensions of the phone will be 139.8×66.2×8.6mm.. The E7 LCD will be 4.7″ 720p IGZO Sharp. The 4.7″ is considered by many to be the maximum LCD size for comfortable 1 hand operation — though I guess it would depend on how big your hands are. In the smartphone world, phones are getting bigger and bigger and it’s nice to see several brands still making a 4.7″ phone.
It’s excellent to see them going with IGZO Sharp. Sharp makes excellent LCDs and it shows Gionee is serious about their displays.
The SoC will be the newly released 4-core [email protected].
Gionee E7 Mini review frequency support
As exciting as the SoC decision and excellent choice in display is, the frequency support in terms of 3G lacks 850/1900 WCDMA. Though 2G GSM will be quad-band 850/900/1800/1900. The WCDMA 3G frequencies supported will be 900/2100, which automatically nixes this phone as a possible choice for most people living in the Americas.
being stuck with only 16GB
The Gionee E7 Mini will have 1GB RAM and 16GB ROM storage. Unfortunately the E7 Mini will not have an SD expansion slot, so 16GB is what you’re stuck with. Though this should be fine for many, being stuck with only 16GB, a good portion of which will be internal storage, could leave some users stifled — especially if you’re one who stores a lot of video content on your mobile.
Gionee E7 Mini review battery, sensors, camera
The battery will be 2200mA. This is fine for a 4.7″ phone and assuming the E7 has at least decent battery efficiency, it should easily get most users through the day.
The sensors included are proximity sensor, G-sensor, E-Compass, gyroscope sensor and light sensor. It will also support OTA (over-the-air) updates, so no worries as to having to manually flash your phone.
Though Gionee isn’t the first, it’s still an ingenious invention
The real gem on the E7 is the 13.0mp camera, which rotates 180º from front to back. Though Gionee isn’t the first, it’s still an ingenious invention and excellent they’ve included it here. Beyond the cool factor, this allows the manufacturer to keep the front facing camera as high end as the rear facing because they’re one in the same.
Gionee E7 Mini review conclusion
I really like the styling and thought that went into the Gionee E7. This phone presents some unique characteristics — The MT6588 SoC and rotating camera. It unfortunately lacks 850/1900MHz WCDMA and an SD expansion slot, but if these two factors aren’t a major consideration for you, the E7 Mini should prove to be an excellent choice.
