The massive potential of solar roadways is clear. There is virtually limitless surface area that could be converted into power. But what about some of the other uses of these interlocking solar panels?
Consider a moose is crossing the road 100 yards ahead around a curve and you get warned with LEDs built into the road. Self-heating road panels that melt snow as it lands. Roads that ‘paint’ themselves and change style according to the current conditions — for example calculating speeds of on-coming cars and the car you’re about to pass to change the road from a passing zone to a non-passing zone and vice versa. Not to mention streets straight out of Tron. These are just a few of the remarkable possibilities that lie ahead.
Think it’s all fantasy? The estimated costs in the USA alone is in the trillions to pave the country with these goodies, but that’s not to say it’s an impossible project. The seed project has reached $1.25 million already in crowd sourced funding and is underway to begin real world testing.
