Oppo R817 mtk6577 dual-core Music Phone! (w/ Quick specs and Camera Sample Shots)

Oppo hops on the music phone bandwagon hoping to catch youth customers with it’s excellent audio features. The Oppo R817 out-of-the-box supports automatic lyric and cover search, and flac / app double lossless, ogg and amr as well as the standard audio formats.

It also comes with “Dirac HD Sound”.

From the Dirac website:

Dirac HD Sound™ is a premium mixed-phase speaker correction technology. Unlike equalizers and other sound-correction systems, Dirac HD sound™ also optimizes the sound system’s transient reproduction – a factor critical for accurate staging and clarity.

The benefits of using Dirac HD Sound™ include:

  • Voice correction – voices become clear and intelligible
  • Stereo image correction – sound is decoupled from the loudspeakers
  • Bass correction – a deeper and tighter bass
  • Listening fatigue minimization
  • Tonal & transient correction

Technical highlights of Dirac HD Sound™

  • True impulse response optimization
  • High class magnitude response optimization striking a perfect balance between resolution and robustness
  • Mixed-phase filter technology
  • Unconventional combination of FIR and IIR filters for the most efficient implementation
  • Advanced, yet easy-to-use software

The Oppo R817, as any mtk mt6577 / mtk6577 smartphone should, will be able to playback 720p no problem. Oppo R817 scores a not-too-shabby 5381 on Antutu and a very good 1187 on Vellamo. Vellamo tests stability and performance of web rendering and was developed by Qualcomm. 1187 places it just beneath the Xiaomi MI-One Plus, and about 20% behind the HTC One-X.

The camera is 8mp and I think puts out some quality shots.

As you can see it puts out some very decent outdoor shots. The indoor shots are a bit dark, but a quick “auto contrast” within your favorite photo editor does wonders. Hover over the images below to see the difference.

No word on price yet, but looks like a good option for those looking for great audio capabilities. Oppo going with mtk mt6577 / mtk6577 should keep the cost reasonable. Will give more word as it comes. Please comment and subscribe to keep the Beat rollin’.

Please do try to include these points of tech specs to make it look complete.

    Example
    Screen Size: 4.5″
    Screen type: IPS
    Battery: 2500mAh
    OS: Android 4.1.1

If any of these is not available then you can mention NA or TBD etc.

Damian with your permission I would like to write an imaginary conversation in my head regarding the Oppo R817 price tag.

    It started like this :

A : This product got the same specs with any other brand out there..

B : Yes the screen resolution is just WVGA class but it‘s an IPS with no scratch resistent technology, equipped with 8 mpix camera at the back and 0,3 mpix at front. got an autofocus and led flash on it. Wait! There‘s more! Its got 1 Gb of RAM/4 Gb ROM powered by Mediatek dual core CPU MT6577! And with US$ 360 in your pocket you can buy this phone right away.

A : What! US$ 360 for a phone with specs similiar with any other brand out there does it worth it? With that kind of money you could purchase two sets of Newman N1! And it has qHD resolution screen protected by Corning Gorilla glass.

B : Well, Newman can have Gorilla glass on it but does it have the Dirac sound technology?

A : (Nodding head) Ah, so that‘s why this phone cost about US$360!

    LOL!

Hahah… Ari, I 100% agree. The phone is great looking, but the camera is average and I don’t care what kind of sound technology it has – with the size of smartphone speakers being what they are, it can’t be worth an extra $100+

Glad that you see my point of view Damian. This pricing policy made by Oppo some might say close to HTC pricing strategy. You won‘t find any device from HTC in global market below US$300 mark! And what makes Oppo somewhat resembling to HTC is putting on these sound technology as their distingushing mark from others. But in my opinion, HTC also Sony who had these kind of sound technology are those among established well known brand and marketing network globally. For me, Oppo has doing a great job to mark their work by making acclaimed thinnest smartphone and equipped with high end hardware. Just like Meizu and Xiaomi, Oppo should compete with them with high end specs and performance targeting the high end segment yet affordable to these market. And if Oppo try to reach lower segment at least put up a better hardware as their marketing weapon. I‘m not saying MT6577 is a crap CPU but let‘s face it, its originally targeting the US$200 device for a start. I don‘t know exactly what kind of a reaction Oppo R817 get so far by now. Is it a hit or not enthusiastic response will they get from prospect consumers. But really I found myself not to fancy about this product. Anyone will say otherwise?

Yes, I agree Ari… While the phone is great looking, I think it would be foolish to spend anything more than $250 on a MTK6577 based smartphone. Especially with so many $160-$200 1GB alternatives and MTK6588 / MTK6589 right around the corner.

Hi after reading your comments some that were a bit harsh, i felt i had to reply. I ordered the oppo r817 after reading reviews of it & already owned there bdp-83 blu ray player which is one of the best out there & has won numerus awards. The phone is good looking as stated, the screen 900 x 450 while not as many pixals as some other similar or cheaper priced phones like newman n1, r817 plaving videos has excellent colour balance skin tones are natural and colours arent oversaturated like in other more expensive phones. It also has a very good viewing angle and the screen hasnt got any scratches after a few weeks use plus i could always use screen protectors that came with it. On to the dirac hd sound which only work with headphones or attatching speakers to the headphone jack, it really makes any music played sound better expecially low bit rate mp3 files. The album search is a cool feature & lyric search is awsome been able to listen to your music while seen the lyrics at same time & in synch, i dont think many phones have that option out the box. Oppo’S own user interface is layered on top of android and its cool unlike any other ui from any company, oppo have a great clock widget, 3d weather widget and best i think is there cool record player widget that lets you use it to play your music. All in all its the best phone ive ever had, & ive had plenty phones in the past. Finally you say it price $360 is to much, i bought it online for $319 free shipping from ali express but seller gave $15 discount which took the price down to a good price of $304.

I forgot to also mention the 8 mega pixal camera is exactly same as one in iphone 4s, oppo r817 takes great pictures & videos which are just as good as my pals iphone 4s can take. The touch screen is very smooth to use apps load fast and internet browsing is fairly quick using 3g or wifi.

Thanks for your comments Chinda. I still think there are some phenomenal deals out there for $200, and the Oppo R817 is a full 50% more expensive than that… Not worth it to me, but if you’re an audiophile and like the aesthetics and extra level of quality control, the Oppo R817 could well be worth it. Let us know where you got the good deal from in case some may be interested in the Oppo R817.
