Recently I reviewed the interesting but flawed MPIE 909T. In that review I remarked:
“I was impressed with the hardware of the phone. The fingerprint reader is a novel and interesting feature, the LCD is excellent, the external speaker might be the best I’ve heard in a China phone and it’s one of a handful of phones that include the 1900MHz WCDMA 3G frequency.
However, the disturbing reboot of the phone, the faked ROM and battery specs, and the terribly small stock internal storage, are very disappointing.”
We now get a chance to check out a second MPIE phone — The MPIE G7. Did they get it right this time? We will know next week, but in preparation for the MPIE G7 review, let’s have a look at the specs and see what it has to offer on paper.
For a limited time, the 2GB MPIE G7 LTE 4G phone is on sale at Gearbest for $131.99 with coupon code GBG7LM
MPIE G7 review SoC
For gaming, the MPIE G7 should be able to push any modern game smoothly.
The MPIE G7 comes with the MT6582 SoC. That’s a quad-core Cortex-A7 1.3GHz CPU paired with a dual-core Mali-400 GPU. In terms of pushing Android, it’s plenty powerful enough assuming the firmware is stable. For gaming, the MPIE G7 should be able to push any modern game smoothly.
MPIE G7 review connectivity and extras
The G7 has the standard array of connectivity options including quad-band GSM 850/900/1800/1900MHz, Bluetooth and the now often included OTG for connecting a mouse, keyboard, or drive.
Canada, Central and South America, Africa, and Asia should gain both 3G and 4G coverage with this phone with the right carrier
In addition, the MPIE G7 includes WCDMA 850/1900/2100MHz and FDD-LTE 800/1800/2100/2600MHz. The 3G on the G7 is geared towards the Americas, including USA, but the 4G is geared towards everywhere but USA.
Canada, Central and South America, Africa, and Asia should gain both 3G and 4G coverage with this phone with the right carrier. It’s a shame they didn’t add 700 and 1700 to cover USA with 4G coverage as well, but at least USA 3G frequency support is included, which is more than I can say for a lot of the competition.
Also included is a fingerprint scanner.
As always, check what frequencies your carrier uses to make sure this phone will operate on 3G and/or 4G.
Also included is a fingerprint scanner. In practice with the 909t, I found it to be quite accurate. It did take a bit of getting used to to get a consistently accurate read, but once getting it down, it became second nature and I expect it to be no different with the MPIE G7.
MPIE G7 review RAM/ROM
The butter on the toast for the MPIE G7 is that it includes 2GB of RAM as opposed to the typical 1GB. Most users will be just fine with 1GB, however with 2GB of RAM there are a few advantages that busy and power users may notice.
I do like the tradeoff here
As mentioned earlier, MT6582 is plenty of juice for an all around smooth Android experience and I do like the tradeoff here — that is going with MT6582 2GB RAM as opposed to a higher specified MT6592 SoC with 1GB RAM.
The ROM storage of the MPIE G7 is 8GB. Some may consider this inadequate, but the phone supports SD TF card storage expansion up to 64GB. The real question here is how much of the 8GB is relegated to internal storage, and hopefully MPIE took a bit smarter route with the G7 than they did with the MPIE 909T.
MPIE G7 review style
The MPIE G7 takes on a similar look as the well known iOcean X7, with lightly curved top and bottoms giving it a bit of character. The specs show the G7 as 143.5*71*7mm. I like the looks as it’s quite squarish, but the corners are slightly rounded so not to dig into your fingers as with the THL T11.
MPIE G7 review battery
The MPIE G7 battery is reported as being 2200mA. This is slightly more than the 2000mA included with most 5.0″ smartphones, and in combination with the 540p resolution should give the MPIE at least 5 hours onscreen WiFi web-browsing.
MPIE G7 review display LCD
I expect the G7 display to at least maintain the standard of the MPIE 909t which was excellent
The MPIE G7 has a 5.0″ LCD at a resolution of 960*540. This gives the G7 a PPI of 220. The recently released Doogee Kissme DG580 also has a resolution of 540p, but the display on the DG580 is 5.5″.
I found the DG580 display to be easily pleasant enough resolution wise and so it should prove a step nicer on the MPIE G7. I expect the G7 display to maintain the standard of the MPIE 909t which was excellent.
MPIE G7 review specifications conclusion
On paper, I like the G7 spec wise. The battery should be sufficient for a 5.0″ display. The 2GB RAM is an interesting spec, and as mentioned, I like that they kept the cost low by using MT6582 as opposed to MT6592. The phone has 3G support for USA, and 3G and 4G support for much of the rest of the world.

On top of it, we have the nice bonus of OTG and a fingerprint scanner. While the fingerprint scanner is a bit of a novelty that may wear off for some, those who keep their phone locked may find it to be an excellent alternative to having to enter a code or swipe pattern.
The MPIE 909t made a few critical mistakes and I’m very curious to see if the G7 can make good on them.
The real question here, is will the MPIE G7 repeat the mistakes of the MPIE 909t? I will have my full review coming up shortly to answer that.
The standard price of just shy of $150 is quite good, but the current coupon price of $131.99 seems an outstanding deal for a phone specified such as.
