In a very strange move, that no one quite understands yet, Mediatek has changed the name of their CPU from MTK MT6588 / MTK6588 to MTK MT6589 / MTK6589 .
I rather liked MTK6588. It had a nice ring to it, was easy to remember, and 88 is dividable by 4 (quad) for a solution (22) that when multiplied together (2*2) =’s 4 (quad) as well. It was the perfect chip numeration for this generation of MTK CPU.
Ahh, there’s no accounting for Chinese marketing strategy.
I think it’s their second or third time name change. First it was 6583 (dual) and 6585 (quad) then it became 6585 (dual) and 6588 (quad) and now this 6589….
Hope in the end, they’ll not say that its a cpu+gpu+vfp+wtf core =quadcore :)

Hello Ram, I assume you mean the purpose of MediaTek changing the name, as opposed to the purpose of my post… I’m not sure why they changed it. I thought 6588 was an excellent numeration for the quad. It’s possible they’re saving 88 for the 8 core? 6588 would be an excellent model number for the 8 core as well.
If it‘s up to me, I will naming these product differently.
Why? Because it‘s totally different product that seperate from previous ones. It‘s fabrication uses 28nm technology, supporting more highly resolution both camera and screen, it has GPU‘s that can handle heavy rendering image.
So, what came across my mind that code name on these newest chipsets should be totally different. Perhaps 7xxx could be applied? It ‘s based on Cortex A7 so number 7 is an obvious clue that the device powered by that architecture.
Well, that‘s just my thought‘s. Anyone agree with that?
It’s an interesting though Ara, starting the series with 7. I like it, but I think most people who buy smartphones don’t even know (or care) what architecture their smartphones are sporting. I’ve wondered if they changed the name so they could use 6588 with the 8-core, but it’s probably not the case. Just a thought. We’ll have to wait a good 6 months or so I’d guess before any type of solid naming scheme for the 8 core comes about.
Well like or not the name of the product sometimes take part of decision making, right? for example, many android users knows or familiar with names such as MSM 7227A or MSM 8225. Just say that product code they will know what clockspeed they have! True?
Once again, it‘s just a thought.
Aside of that I believe if Mediatek consistant with their move like now, speed up their time release of a product that match up those big competitors with a affordable price, sooner or later Mediatek will become the big three of mobile processor manufacturer. Also I bet that Mediatek octa core processor will make huge impact. They will set the new meaning of sophisticated gadget doesn‘t necessarily mean high price!
You are correct Ari, sometimes the model numbers can contain information regarding the specs of said model.
That being said, it’s very strange Qualcomm chose MSM…Which means male-sex-male…GizBeat is not prejudice and welcomes all types, but I do find it an odd choice.
Male-Sex-Male?? Whoa that‘s new to me…LOL. So what is MT stand for? Male-Tentacles? LOL again!
