MT6738T vs MT6738 vs MT6737. MediaTek puts out a new budget SoC
MTK6738
MTK6735 was a huge hit in 2015 with $100 ballpark mobiles. In 2016 it was followed up by MTK6737. Now news of a new SoC from MediaTek — MTK6738.
MTK6738T vs MTK6738 vs MTK6737
Modem
When comparing the MT6737 vs MT6738, we see that MT6738 has increased modem support to Cat 6 from Cat 4 in MT6737.
CPU
The CPU in the MT6738 is still ARM Cortex-A53, but clocked significantly higher at 1.5GHz in comparison to MT6737’s 1.1-1.3GHz.
GPU
Perhaps the biggest news about MTK6738 is that the GPU gets a big bump up to Mali-860MP2@350MHz vs Mali-720MP2@550MHz in MT6737. This change is big for gamers, and is the same GPU as what’s in Helio P10 MT6755, albeit at a lower clock in MT6738 (700MHz in P10 vs MT6738’s 350MHz).
It means that extreme budget mobiles with MT6738 will handle the latest games at 1080P. Perhaps not at top frame rates, but they should remain playable, and all games at 720P will run very smoothly at 30fps+.
Dual-camera ISP
The MT6738 also carries support for dual rear cameras, which is something the MT6737 did not carry. It means that we may begin to see stereo cameras in $100 mobiles in the near future.
MT6738T vs MT6738
In the MTK6738T variant, the GPU will be clocked at up to 520MHz vs MT6738 standard at 350MHz.
Phones so far
So far, there is only one brand putting out mobiles with MT6738 — Green Orange. There was some news about Green Orange a couple of years back, but they never gained traction in China shops catering to westerners and are a little known China brand phone company.
Big power in inexpensive phones
Don’t snub the MT673x SoCs. We’ve tested quite a few MT6735 and MT6737, and these are SoC that run android smoothly. The MT6738 and MT6738T are SoC we look forward to testing in the near future and given MTK’s budget SoC track record so far, it’s unlikely we’ll be disappointed.
