Red will be releasing a $1500 smartphone, the “world’s first holographic media machine”

Red, the company which makes professional cinema video cameras has announced they’ll be putting out a smartphone. The name of the phone is Hydrogen One.

The Hydrogen One can be used as a monitor and user interface for their pro video cameras. It will have USB-C charging, and a microSD slot for expanding memory.

Similar to Moto mods for Motorola modular phones, the Hydrogen One will be able to accept modular upgrades. One of the mentioned upgrades is a peripheral camera which will be able to capture high quality video and still images, as well as Hydrogen forma holographic images.

The big news about Hydrogen One is that it will be able to switch from a 2D display to a 3D/VR/AR/Holographic display. According to Red, this is accomplished using ‘nanotechnology’.

The Red Hydrogen One will be available in Q1 2018. Current retail prices announced by Red are $1195 for the Aluminum version and $1595 for the Titanium version.
