As mentioned yesterday in part 1, the quad-core MTK MT6589 / MTK6589 could possibly released this year. It’s already successfully been implemented in test phones. Let’s rehash and go over the key points I’d like to cover:
- MTK MT6589 / MTK6589 will support up to 13mp camera : I’ve never been a big fan of the bigger is better theory with megapixels. I’ll take me a 5mp high quality camera over a mediocre 13mp quality camera any day. But as we’ve seen with the 8mp camera in the JiaYu g3, quality in these bigger megapixel smartphone cameras can be very good, so hopefully that trend continues. I still don’t see the point of a 13mp camera in a phone, as 99% of users are likely not making poster sized prints or doing huge crops.
The majority of people are likely going to buy a 13mp over a 5mp simply because it sounds better, and then post 800×600 (<1Mp) images on Facebook, and be emailing 10Mb single picture attachment without reducing first. Bigger MP is a sales point, I’ll give the manufacturers that.
Don’t go away yet. Part 3 coming up to touch on these other, and perhaps most important key points:
- MTK MT6589 / MTK6589 will support 1080p video recording and decoding.
- MTK MT6589 / MTK6589 will officially support 720p 1280×800 display.
- MTK MT6589 / MTK6589 will have the SGX 544 GPU!
