Recently I did a post about the pitfalls of buying a China phone, but what are they missing feature wise?
We’ve seen China brands really blossom over the last 2 years. Many phones are coming with OTG, and some with NFC as well. The one thing they’re still missing that many of the Big Boys such as Samsung have, is HDMI / MHL.
There have been a couple of China phone models released that have had HDMI, but it was problematic and required several firmware updates to get it somewhat proper. There’s also Wireless Display / Miracast which most modern Jelly Bean phones should support, but there’s some lag with this technology. With HDMI / MHL, the image is ‘instantaneously’ shown. Not all TVs are ‘smart’ as well, but most TVs that aren’t ancient CRT style should have an HDMI / MHL input.
In the world of big screen TVs and monitors, being able to connect your smartphone to the TV to game, stream a movie, or surf the web on the big screen would be a great step for China brands. The technology isn’t new or expensive. Even the cheap $30 Android all-in-one mini boxes normally have HDMI / MHL out.
We feel it should be standard functionality for all China brands. Hopefully along with 4G / LTE, we’ll see HDMI / MHL coming as a matter of course within 2014.
What features do you want to see in China brands in 2014?
