MT6595 GPU – To Be Mali-T720 or PowerVR Series 6?

Cortex A12This week we’ve had several articles regarding the recent official news of MTK6595. I really enjoy writing about this sort of thing as opposed to the ‘by rote’ previews that many sites churn out. Of course they’re required writing for many of the popular phones, but we try to keep the fluff to a minimum here. Let’s get on with the show.

As reported, the current news is that the GPU in MT6595 is to be one of the new PowerVR series6. For a couple different reasons this flies in the face of what we’d expected it to be.

First is that the current generation – MT6572, MT6582, MT6595 are all powered by Mali GPUs. Not so strange to switch back to PowerVR, except for the fact that Cortex-A17 is designed from the bottom up to work with Mali-T720 and is out of the box backwards compatible with Mali-450.

ARM states: “Its modern design is best complemented with the latest advanced IP like ARM Mali-T720 GPU, ARM Mali-DP500 DPU, and ARM Mali-V500 VPU and CoreLink™ CCI-400, but is also fully backwards compatible to existing AMBA3 and AMBA4 AXI based systems based on ARM Mali-450 GPU and CoreLink NIC-400 to ease integration and time-to-market.”

Still, MediaTek has officially stated the GPU will be “Integrated Imagination Technologies PowerVR™ Series6 GPU for high-performance graphics”. Whether it will be G6200/G6400 or the higher end G6230/G6430. G6200 is already being used with MT8135. All of these GPUs support OpenGL ES 3.0, OpenGL ES 2.0, OpenGL 3 .x/4.x, OpenCL 1.x and DirectX10. The higher end G6230/G6430 also supports DirectX11.1.

The next couple months should tell the tale.

This and your other recent articles about the MT6595 / future Mediatek chips are really well written. The fact that you give predictions and evolve what could happening based on experience / logic thinking (while other similar websites usually just “spam” the news, taking anything as “god given” without any reflection) really seperates your website from the others – I hope you stick to this “style” in the future :-)

Nice article Damian. But of all these article about Mediatek’s current and upcoming SoC there is one line up that probably out of attention from many users and blogger writers. It’s MT6588 what I’m talking about. Judging from its specs, it looks like a predecessor to MT6589. Same amount of core, faster clockspeed, and it has Mali 450MP as its GPU. Strange enough to find out that none whatsoever mention about upcoming smartphones either china brand or big names about to adopt this SoC! Do you know anything about this?
