64-Bit MT6732 vs 64-Bit MT6752 – What’s The Difference?

mt6752We just finished up some articles about MT6595 and an article about the upcoming MT6752 64-bit SoC for high-end devices. We decided it would be a good idea to talk about the difference between the two 64-bit SoCs planned by MediaTek for Q4 of 2014.

While more details will emerge, currently we know that both MT6752 and MT6732 will use ARM Cortex-A53 and ARM Mali-T760 for GPU. Both will support LTE 150Mbps down / 50Mbps up, TD-LTE/FDD-LTE, HSPA+, WCDMA, TD-SCDMA, EDGE / GSM. Both will be 64-bit.

The differences that we know of so far are short and sweet. First is the number of cores. While MTK6752 will be 8-core / octa-core, the MTK6732 will be 4-core / quad-core. Next is the maximum speed the CPUs will run at. The MT6752 is scheduled to operate at a maximum of 2.0GHz, the MT6732 is scheduled to operate at a maximum of 1.5GHz.

In terms of smoothness and quickness of Android operation, the average user will notice very little difference if any.

The MT6752 officially supports up to 1080p, while the MT6732 officially supports up to 720p.

The GPU, while both Mali-T760 will come at clocked at different speeds. The MT6732 GPU will be clocked at 500MHz, while the MT6752 clocked at 700MHz. This makes a substantial difference on benchmark tests, but in actual gaming will not be noticed by most with current generation gaming.

It’s important to remember that for this article, we’re talking about current and near future versions of Android on mobile phones and tablets. ARM SoC are not only for Android. When considering this, it’s very possible there may be a more significant gap between the performance of MT6752 and MT6732, depending on which devices (other than mobile / tablets) the SoCs are implemented and at what resolution the SoC is working with.
