One area MTK has lagged behind in is frequency support. The WCDMA 3G frequencies supported often are 850/2100 900/2100 and occasionally 2100 only. That all may change when MT6290 is released. MT6290 is MediaTek’s 4G/LTE modem and is capable of supporting multimode, multiband — including TD-LTE, FDD-LTE, TD-SCDMA, WCDMA, and GSM.

I say “is capable of” because it’s yet unknown how the default MT6290 will be configured. As with previous generations of MTK modems, it likely will be left up to the brand/manufacturer as to which frequencies will be supported, but we’re hoping that said manufacturers make a bit more of an effort to get their models up to 2014 speed by manufacturing phones that are compatible worldwide with 3G/4G. This is a big hurdle, but one that if leaped may give China brands significantly more positive consideration by the general public.
According to industry analyst / insider Pan Jiutang, MT6290 will be released in June of this year will be backwards compatible with the recent generation of MediaTek SoC.

MT6595, MTK’s upcoming SoC is expected to come default with MT6290. Official news from MediaTek is that MTK6595 contain ARM Cortex-A17 & Cortex-A7 in a big.Little configuration, and will switch from the Mali based GPU in MT6592/MT6582 to a PowerVR Series6. Pan Jiutang reports MT6595 will be released in August or September.
MTK’s 64-bit solutions which use ARM Cortex-A53 and ARM Mali-T760 for GPU will also carry the MT6290 and will support LTE 150Mbps down / 50Mbps up, TD-LTE/FDD-LTE, HSPA+, WCDMA, TD-SCDMA, EDGE / GSM.
MTK6752 will be 8-core / octa-core and the MTK6732 will be 4-core / quad-core. The 64-bit MT6752 is scheduled to operate at a maximum of 2.0GHz, the MT6732 is scheduled to operate at a maximum of 1.5GHz. MT6732 and MT6752 are expected to hit sometime in Q4 2014.
