While hard drives will always get bigger and processors continue to get faster, there’s one aspect of technology that may not improve much – The amount of Megapixels in LCD’s.  84″ TV’s with 8mp, or “4k” (which stands for 4 x 1080hd) are now being released by the hardware giants – Sony, Toshiba, LG.

While on these huge LCD’s you can discern the pixels at 3 feet distance, nobody is going to be watching an 84″ television from 3 feet away, and on smaller televisions “4k” will be impossible to discern even when getting closeup. So, realistically there is not much further need for increasing of pixels..,

Especially not on smaller TV’s.   Perhaps with industrial and commercial use of huge LCD TV’s, there will be further increasing of megapixels, but in regards to the consumer, even with price not being a factor, 84″ is beyond the limit of what 99+% of what consumers will use in their home.

Will companies continue to increase the megapixels anyways?  The answer is a resounding YES!  Simply because megapixels sell.  All other things being equal, in 2020, even if it’s impossible to see the difference without a microscope, which TV will you take?  The 12mp TV, or the “lowly” 10mp TV?

Now, this isn’t to say other aspects of LCD technology won’t improve.  Brightness, saturation, viewing angles, color enhancement, and energy requirements still have a lot of room for improvement, but megapixels in televisions have just about reached their discernible plateau.
